Beginning with "Why?"

This blog post is to explain why ePortfolios should be used in high school technology programs. Read about my innovation plan to find out more.

Part A:

WHY: The purpose of using ePortfolios in a high school technology class is to empower students to showcase their learning and growth through a digital platform and aims to foster self-directed learning, critical thinking, and digital literacy skills.

HOW: To achieve this purpose, ePortfolios will be integrated into the curriculum by providing training to students on creating and maintaining their ePortfolios, and will facilitate ongoing reflection of their learning journeys.

WHAT: In using ePortfolios, the tangible outcome is a collection of digital artifacts that demonstrate a student’s growth, skills, and achievements over time which can include projects, essays, presentations, and more.

Part B:

Leading Change: Kotter's videos "Heart of Change" and "Leading Change: Establish a Sense of Urgency" discuss how to create successful organizational change. One thing Kotter (2013) mentioned is the importance of creating a compelling "Why" statement to engage stakeholders emotionally and establish a sense of urgency. By starting with your “why?” and then relaying back to your “how?” and “what?”, you can reach the limbic part of the brain, which controls decision-making. As Simon Sinek (2009) said “People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it and what you do simply proves what you believe. In fact, people will do the things that prove what they believe.” In order to become a leader of organizational change, you must find your why and relay that message to your stakeholders.

"Why EPortfolios?": Imagine a journey where students are empowered to create their own story, where growth is reachable, and potential knows no bounds. A digital platform that aims to foster self-directed learning, critical thinking, and digital literacy skills. With ePortfolios, students will learn to create and maintain their own learning. Each artifact, a testament to progress; every click, a step toward self-discovery. It's about owning learning, embracing digital skills, and nurturing skills for a dynamic world. Tomorrow's challenges need today's preparation. Let's unlock a future where students flourish, empowered by their unique ePortfolios.
